The Rook
Robert Rook issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Ratcliffe, Middlesex. The depiction of a rook is a play on the issuers name.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2361; Obv inscription: ROBERT. ROOKE. IN. RATCLIFE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A rook R.D.R. (triad of initials in Roman capitals around sign, in field); Rev inscription: NEARE.THE.SCOOLE.HOVSE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / 1666 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Robert Rook's business stood near the Cooper's Company school, in Ratcliffe, see token number 8358 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 62, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VIII - Middlesex and Uncertain Pieces. Ratcliffe is a disctrict in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of Middlesex.
