The Bricklayers' Arms
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Bricklayer's Arms, in Ratcliffe Highway (now The Highway), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2354; Obv inscription: THE.BRICKLERS.ARMES (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Bricklayers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: IN.RATLIF.HIE.WAYE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = M.M.M. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful company of Tilers and Bricklayers are: Azure a chevron or, in a chief, a fleur-de-lis argent between two brick-axes palewise or, in base a "brush" also (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960).
