The Whale
Thomas Leaver, a soap maker, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at Ratcliffe Highway (now The Highway), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2353; Obv inscription: THO.LEAVER.SOPE.MAKER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A whale and three harpoons (in field); Rev inscription: AT.RATCLIEF.HEYWAY.1667 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Ratcliffe Highway (now The Highway), lies in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having previously been part of Middlesex.
