The Noble Garter
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Noble Garter, in Queenhithe.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2301; Obv inscription: AT.THE.NOBLE.GARTER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three fishes (in field); Rev inscription: AT.QVEENE.HIFE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = B.M.F. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer is known to be Bartholomew Fish of St Michael Queenhithe, see Percival Boyd, [Inhabitants of London]. Society of Genealogists, MS. 17831. See also token number 7523 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. Bartholomew Fish also issued a half penny token, see NN18096 and NN18097, in the museum collection. Queenhithe, was the name of a dock and a ward in the City of London, the ward name is still used today, and a street in the area of the dock, holds the name Queenhithe.
