Robert Hale, a chandler (a ship's chandler sold supplies and equipment specifically for ships), issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Puddle Dock.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2291; Obv inscription: ROBERT.HALE.AT.PVDLE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: DOCK.CHANDLER.1662 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.M.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
