This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the New Virginia, in Pancras Lane. The business is likely to have sold tobacco, the name and sign being a reference to the product from Virginia, America.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2179; Obv inscription: AT.THE.NEW.VIRGINNE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = An Indian smoking a pipe and holding a leaf of tobacco (in field); Rev inscription: IN. PANKCROSE. LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = T.S.B. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Pancras Lane, runs east off Queen Street, where it joins Sise Lane, in Cordwainer Ward and Cheap Ward, in the City of London.
