The Swan Tavern
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the Swan tavern, in Old Fish Street (now Knightrider Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2141; Obv inscription: AT.THE.SWAN.TAVERNE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A swan (in field); Rev inscription: IN.OVLD.FISH.STREET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.A.M. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer was 'Mr John Marshall at the Swan in Old Fish Street, vintner, in churchwardens' accounts of St Nicholas Cole Abbey 1632-50 (Kenneth Rogers, 'On some issuers of seventeenth-century London tokens whose names were not known to Boyne and WIlliamson', NC, 5th series 8 (1928), p.p. 87).
