The Two Sugar Loaves
Joseph Holled, a grocer, issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at Newgate.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2036; Obv inscription: IOSEPH.HOLLED (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Two sugar-loaves and a tea chest suspended (in field); Rev inscription: AT.NEWGAT.GROCER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.A.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).

Newgate was a gate through the Roman City walls; it lay in the wards of Newgate Within and Newgate Without, the area is now part of the wards of Farringdon Within and Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
