The Swan
Robert Carrington issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Newgate Within.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2035B; Obv inscription: ROBERT.CARRINGTON (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A swan (in field); Rev inscription: WITHIN.NEWGATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.B.C. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Newgate Within was a ward which lay inside the Roman walls of the City of London, it later became part of the ward of Farringdon Within, in the City of London.
