The Plaisterers' Arms
Alexander Rud issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Maidenhead Yard, Moor Lane.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1974; Obv inscription: ALEXANDER.RVD.IN.MAIDEN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Plaisterers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: HEAD.YARD.IN.MORE.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A / HALFE / PENNY / TOKEN (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful company of Plasterers are: Azure on a cheveron argent on a rose gules budded, or stalked and leaved vert, between two fleurs de lys azure; in chief a trowel fessewise between two plasterer's hammers palewise all argent handled or, in base a plasterer's brush of four knots tied argent handled (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by HeatherChild...(London, 1960). Moor Lane lay in the ward of Cripplegate Without (now Cripplegate Ward), in the City of London, and in Finsbury, Middlesex. It now forms part of the boundary between Cripplegate Ward and Coleman Street Ward.
