The Angel
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business in Moorfields, near Bethlehem Hospital Gate.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1957; Obv inscription: AT.THE.MOREFIELDS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = An angel (in field); Rev inscription: NEARE.BADLAM-GATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = H.S.C. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The Moorfields were the last open pieces of land in the City of London. After the Great Fire of London refugees from the Fire set up homes here. Though intended to be temporary it is not known how many people went on to establish permanent premises here.
