The Lion
John Weld issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the sign of the Lion, on London Bridge.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1763. Obv inscription: IOH.WELD.AT.YE.LYON (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion rampant (in field); Rev inscription: ON.LONDON.BRIDGE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.W / 57 (initials in Roman capitals with date below, in field).
London Bridge, and the surrounding area, on the north bank of the River Thames, lies in Bridge Ward, in the City of London.
