The Peel
John Alder issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Baker's Peel, in Leadenhall Street. The token depicts a bakers' peel (a flat shovel, used to get bread and other goods in and out of ovens).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1644; Obv inscription: IOHN.ALDER.AT.YE.PEALE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A baker's peel and 1668 (in field); Rev inscription: IN.LEADEN.HALL.STREET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / I.A.A. (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer is John Alder of St Katherin Cree, b. 1631, Baker, see Percival Boyd, [Inhabitants of London]. Society of Genealogists, MS. 39539.
