The Tallow Chandler
John Langrish issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Houndsditch.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1519; Obv inscription: IOHN.LANGRISH (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A tallowchandler (in field); Rev inscription: IN.HOWNSDITCH (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.L, two flowers between (initials in Roman capitals on either side of sign, in field).
The issuer is 'John Langrish appr. Tallow Chandler 1659, and bound an apprentice 1668, see C. Webb ‘London Livery Company Apprenticeship Registers’ (London, 1996-, xxxix. 10, 63). Houndsditch historically lay within Portsoken Ward and the ward of Bishopsgate Without, in the City of London; it now lies in Portsoken Ward and Aldgate Ward, in the City of London.
