The Rose and Crown
Peter Essington issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the Rose and Crown tavern, in Houndsditch.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1509; Obv inscription: PETER.ESSINGTON (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A rose and a crown P.E (initials in Roman capitals on either side of sign, in field); Rev inscription: IN.HOVNSDICH.1668 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Houndsditch historically lay within Portsoken Ward and the ward of Bishopsgate Without, in the City of London; it now lies in Portsoken Ward and Aldgate Ward, in the City of London.
