The Bell
Giles Bly issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Houndsditch.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1507; Obv inscription: GILES.BLY.1669 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Five bells and a hand bell (in field); Rev inscription: IN.HOVNSDITCH (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / G.B.B. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
The issuer is Giles Bly, a loriner (maker of metal horse equipment parts). See also token number 7134 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. Houndsditch historically lay within Portsoken Ward and the ward of Bishopsgate Without, in the City of London; it now lies in Portsoken Ward and Aldgate Ward, in the City of London.
