The Cock
Savill Wright issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Cock Alley, by Holborn Conduit.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1487; Obv inscription: SAVILL.WRIGHT.IN.COKE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A cock (in field); Rev inscription: ALLEY.HOLBORN.CONDVIT (around field, in Roman capitals) = S.A.W. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
'Holborn Conduit lay, at the junction of Cow Lane, Cock Lane and Snow Hill, in Farringdon Ward Without, later called Lamb's Conduit' (John Strype, ed. A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster, 1720, I. iii. 283), it was taken down in 1746, see Henry A. Harben, A dictionary of London (London, 1918).
