The Three Sugar Loaves

This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Three Sugar Loaves at Holborn Conduit.

Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1456; Obv inscription: THE.3.SVGAR.LOVES (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three sugar-loaves joined (in field); Rev inscription: AT.HOLBORNE.CVNDITE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = T.E.S. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).

The issuer may have been 'Thomas Strudwick, fl. 1664-86, confectioner' (see A.W.Franks, 'A London Token of the 17th century', Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of London, 2nd series, 1 (1859-61), 97-9), who may be identical wih Thomas Strudwick, grocer fl. 1660, at the Star near Holborn Bridge 1692 (see J.R.Woodhead, The Rulers of London 1600-1689, 159).See also, N2073, in the museum collection and token number 7128 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. Holborn Conduit lay, at the junction of Cow Lane, Cock Lane and Snow Hill, in Farringdon Ward Without, later called Lamb's Conduit (John Strype, ed.
