The Three Stags
Anthony Joyce issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at Holborn Conduit.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1427; Obv inscription: ANTHONEY.IOYCE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three stags (in field); Rev inscription: AT.HOBORN.CONDVID (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A.K.I. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer is 'Anthony Joyce, tallow-chandler; Leatherseller 1654, but the stags are not the three roebucks of the passant reguardant of the Leathersellers; wife Katherine (Fenner) a cousin of Samuel Pepys; d. 1668', Robert Latham and William Matthews (eds.), The Diary of Samuel Pepys: a new and complete transcription (London, 1970-83, x.211-12, xi.149). 'Holborn Conduit lay, at the junction of Cow Lane, Cock Lane and Snow Hill, in Farringdon Ward Without, later called Lamb's Conduit' (John Strype, ed. A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster, 1720, I. iii. 283), it was taken down in 1746, see Henry A. Harben, A dictionary of London (London, 1918).
