Nicholas Hawett, a meal man (someone who deals in meal crops, such as oats), issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business on Holborn Hill.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1421; Obv inscription: NICHOLAS.HAWETT.ON (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A wheatsheaf with three birds on it (in field); Rev inscription: HOLBORNE.HILL.MEALE.MAN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = N.E.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
'Holborn Hill, ran west from Holborn Bridge, at Fleet Market, to Holborn at Hatton Garden, and Middle Row' (O.S. 1848-51, as cited in Henry A. Harben, A dictionary of London (London, 1918), in the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
