Thomas Johnson issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Grocer's Alley (area off Poultry).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1281; Obv inscription: THOMAS.IOHNSON.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A cock (in field); Rev inscription: IN.GROCERS.ALLEY (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Grocer's Alley, later called Grocers' Hall Court, lay off Poultry, by the Hall of the Worshipful Company of Grocers, in Cheap Ward and Coleman Street Ward, in the City of London.
