The Weavers' Arms
William Warde issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Green's Rents (area off Bride Lane, Fleet Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1279. Obv inscription: WILL.WARDE.FLEET.BRIDG (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Weavers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: IN.GREENS.RENTS.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / W.A.W. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Weavers are: Azure on a chevron argent between three leopards' heads each holding in the mouth a shuttle, or three roses gules (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). Green's Rents was an area off Bride Lane, Fleet Street, in the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
