The Sugar Loaf
Edward Measey, a comfit maker (confectioner) issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in New Gravel Lane (now Garnet Street), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1224; Obv inscription: ED.MEASEY.NEW.GRAVELL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A sugar-loaf and E.M (initials in Roman capitals on either side of sign, in field); Rev inscription: LANE.IN.RATCLIFE.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = COMFIT / MAKER / HIS / HAL / PENY (in five lines of Roman capitals, in field).
