The Three Cups
Richard Pawley issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Three Cups, in Golden Lane.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1170; Obv inscription: RICHARD.PAWLEY.AT.THE.3 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Grocers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: CVPPS.IN.GOLDING.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY / R.M.P. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Grocers are: Argent a chevron Gules between nine cloves Sable (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). Golden Lane is in Cripplegate Ward, in the City of London.
