The Pestle and Mortar
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the Inner Temple Gate, in Fleet Street.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1094. Obv inscription: AT.THE.INNER.TEMPLE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A mortar and two pestles (in field); Rev inscription: GATE.IN.FLEET.STREET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.I.S. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Inner Temple Gate was on Inner Temple Lane, off Fleet Street, in the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
