The Red Lion
John Drue issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Red Lion in Dowgate, Dowgate Ward, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 846; Obv inscription: IOHN.DRVE.AT.THE.RED (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion passant gardant (in field); Rev inscription: LYON.AT.DOWGATE.1667 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY / I.H.D. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
