The Paul's Head
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the St Paul's Head tavern near Doctors' Commons.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 839; Obv inscription: AT.THE.PAVLE.HEAD (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A bust of St Paul (in field); Rev inscription: NEARE.DOCTORS.COMONS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = G.H (in field, in Roman capitals).
The issuer may have been, ?Gregory hardwick, Vintner, searcher for the Company 1656, 1663, Warden 1663, Kenneth Rogers, 'On some issuers of seventeenth-century London tokens whose names were not known to Boyne and WIlliamson', NC, 5th series 8 (1928), p. 73. See also token numbers 6865a and 6865b in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. Doctors' Commons, was 'A college or common house of doctors of law, for the study and practice of the civil law' (Henry A. Harben, A Dictionary of London (London, 1918). Doctors' Commons' lay on Queen Victoria Street in Castle Baynard Ward, in the City of London.
