The Sun Tavern
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the Sun tavern in Cripplegate, ward of Cripplegate Without, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 795; Obv inscription: AT.THE.SVNNE.TAVERN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The sun (in field); Rev inscription: AT.CRIPPEL.GATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.E.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer was Isaac Hodgkin, known from a different token, Boyne 1889, London number 797. Isaac Hodgkin, appr. Vintner 1639 (Webb 1996-, xliii, 148, see also 362).
