The Sugar Loaf
Charles Oakes issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Sugar Loaf in Cock Lane. The image of the royal oak is a reference to the issuers name.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 697; Obv inscription: CHARLS.OAKES.AT.YE.SVGER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Kings head and 3 crowns on the royal oak C.D.O. (sign above with triad of initials in Roman capitals at bottom, in field); Rev inscription: LOAFE. IN. COCK. LANE. 1667 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
