The Black Dog
Henry Morice issued this trade token, worth a penny, for his business, the Black Dog tavern in Cock Alley, near Ludgate.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 693; Obv inscripton: HENRY. MORICE. AT. THE. BLACK. DOGG (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = 1D (in field); Rev inscsription: IN.COCK.ALLY.NEAR.LVDGATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A spaniel (in field).
The Black Dog, was a tavern known to be frequented by actors form Blackfriar's Theatre in Playhouse Yard, see J. H. Burn, A Descriptive Catalogue of the London Traders, Tavern, and Coffee-house Tokens current in the Seventeenth Century, presented to the Corporation Library by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy, 2nd ed. (London, 1855), no. 354. Cock Alley lies in the ward of Farringdon Within, in the City of London.
