The Wyvern
William Wittingham issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Cloth Fair.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 692; Obv inscription: WILLIAM.WITTINGAM (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A wyvern (in field); Rev inscription: IN.CLOTH.FAIRE.1657 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = W.D.W. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The sign on the token is a wyvern, a mythical two-legged dragon creature, which is a heraldic symbol. Cloth Fair is in the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
