The Lock and Key
Christopher Bostock issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at Cox's Quay, off Lower Thames Street. The depiction of the cock and key is a play on the name of the area.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 778; Obv inscription: CHRISTOPHER.BOSTOCK (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A cock and a key (in field); Rev inscription: AT.COCKES.KEY.1669 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / C.A.B. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
'On the south side of Lower Thames Street at No. 6 (P.O. Directory). In Billingsgate Ward, adjoining Fresh Wharf on the west', see Henry A. Harbe, A Dictionary Of London (London, 1918). The exact location of the Quay has been recorded differently on various maps. It is known to the be off Lower Thames Street in Billingsgate Ward, in the City of London.
