The Willow Tree
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the sign of the Willow Tree, in Cloak Lane.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 670; Obv inscription: AT.THE.WILLOW.TREE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A willow tree (in field); Rev inscription: IN.CLOAK.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = N.I.B. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
There is another similar token in the museum collection, 96.66/346, for a different issuer. See also token number 6784 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. The same die was later used for a token issued in Old change, the proprietor of the Willow Tree having moved there, see reference above no. 7444. Cloak Lane lies in Vintry Ward, Dowgate Ward and Walbrook Ward, in the City of London.
