The General Monks Head
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of General Monk's head in Church Lane, Whitechapel (area near Whitechapel High Street), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 636; Obv inscription: AT.YE.GENERAL.MVNKES (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = W.R.M. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: HEAD.IN.CHVRCH.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals, in field) Device = Full faced bust of General Monk (in field).
Church Lane is likely to have been in proximity to a small chapel dedicated to St Mary, for which Whitechapel is named. The chapel was destroyed in World War II, the site now being marked by a public garden.
