The Trumpter
James Hasler issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Church Lane, Whitechapel (area near Whitechapel High Street), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 635; Obv inscription: IAMES.HASLER.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A trumpeter on horseback (in field); Rev inscription: IN.CHVRCH.LANE.1669 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Church Lane is likely to have been in proximity to a small chapel dedicated to St Mary, for which Whitechapel is named. The chapel was destroyed in World War II, the site now being marked by a public garden.
