The Shoe
Sibbil Theame, a shoemaker issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for her business at Christ's Hospital (now site of old General Post Office building), Newgate Street. She made shoes for the school children until she lost her business during the Great Fire of 1666. To earn an income and support her daughters she set up a gingerbread stall in the Town Ditch.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 634; Obv inscription: SIBBIL.THEAME.CHRIST (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A shoe (in field); Rev inscription: ASPETAL.SHOMAKER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = S.T (in field, in Roman capitals).
