The Robin Hood
John Tomlinson issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at Robin Hood and Little John tavern, in Chiswell Street.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 630; Obv inscription: IOHN.THOMLINSON.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Robin Hood fitting an arrow to his bow, Little John behind holding an arrow (in field); Rev inscription: IN.CHISWELL.STREET.1667 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY / I.S.T. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
The sign of Robin Hood and Little John is likely to be as a result of the proximity of the Chiswell Street to Finsbury-fields, where archery was practised, an activity considered fashionable and a great accomplishment, see Akerman, Tradesmen's Tokens in London 1648-167 (london, 1849), no. 433. Chiswell Street lies in Coleman Street Ward, in the City of London.
