The Man in the Moon Tavern
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the Man on the Moon tavern in Cheapside.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 599; Obv inscription: THE.MAN.IN.THE.MOON (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A man standing within a crescent (in field); Rev inscripton: TAVERNE.IN.CHEAPSIDE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = S.S.T. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer is Samuel Turner, a vintner, 11641-1660, see Kenneth Rogers, 'On some issuers of seventeenth-century London tokens whose names were not known to Boyne and WIlliamson', NC, 5th series 8 (1928), p. 71.
