The Three Tuns
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business in Cheapside. The three tuns are part of the Arms' of the Brewers' (beer makers) and Vintners' (wine makers).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 583; Obv inscription: AGAINST.THE.GREAT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three tuns (in field); Rev inscription: COVNDIT.IN.CHEAPSIDE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.S.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The Great Conduit on Cheapside, was constructed to run water down. It was demolished after the Great Fire of London, dating this token to before 1666. There is another similar token in the museum collection, N2044.
