The Mitre
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the Mitre tavern in Cheapside.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 579; Obv inscription: AT.THE.MITRE.IN.CHEAP (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A mitre (in field); Rev inscription: SIDE.FORGET.NOT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = T.D (in field, in Roman capitals).
Thomas Dudley, a vintner, was proprietor of the Mitre Tavern between 1648-1650. The Mitre tavern, then held by a different proprietor is known to have burnt down in the Great Fire and not rebuilt, see J. H. Burn, A Descriptive Catalogue of the London Traders, Tavern, and Coffee-house Tokens current in the Seventeenth Century, presented to the Corporation Library by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy, 2nd ed. (London, 1855), no. 311. Cheapside lies in Cheap Ward, Cordwainer Ward, Cripplegate Ward, the ward of Farringdon Within and Bread Street Ward, in the City of London.
