The Angel
John New issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Charter House Lane (now part of Charterhouse Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 567A; Obv inscription: IOHN.NEW.IN.CHARTER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = An angel (in field); Rev inscription: HOVSE.LANE.HIS.HALF.PENY (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = An equal-armed cross 1669 (one number of the year in each quadrant of the cross, in field).
Modern Charterhouse Street lies, in the ward of Farringdon Without in the City of London, and in the London borough of Islington.
