The White Swan
Edmund Stearney issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the White Swan tavern in Chancery Lane, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 523; Obv inscription: THE.WHITE.SWAN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A swan (in field); Rev inscription: IN.CHANCERY.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = E.A.S. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The name of the issuer is known from an advertisement appealing for information about a lost horse in the Newes, No. 36, May 11, 1665, p.316, cited in Boyne, 1889, p. 556. Chancery Lane lies within the London boroughs of Camden, City of Westminster and City of London, in the ward of Farringdon Without, having formerly lain across, Holborn and Westminster in Middlesex, and the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
