The Turk's Head Coffee House
John Rider issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business, a coffee house at the Rolls Gate, in Chancery Lane, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 521; Obv inscription: Jon Rider / at ye Coffee / House at the / Rolls gate in / Chancery / Lane (in 6 lines of cursive script, in field); Rev inscription: HIS / HALF / PENY Device = A Turk's head (text in Roman capitals on either side of image, in field).
There is another similar token in the museum collection, A11404. See also Bryant Lillywhite, London Coffee Houses, 1963, No. 1076 and No. 1392. Chancery Lane lies within the London boroughs of Camden, City of Westminster and City of London, in the ward of Farringdon Without, having formerly lain across, Holborn and Westminster in Middlesex, and the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
