The Spread Eagle
Thomas Newsam issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the double-headed eagle in Chancery Lane, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 516; Obv inscription: THOMAS.NEWSAM.IN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A double-headed eagle displayed (in field); Rev Inscription: CHANCERY.LANE.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
