The Gray Friar
Ralph Hutchinson issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Grey Friar in Chancery Lane, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 507; Obv inscription: RALPH. HVTCHINSON. AT. YE. GRAY (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A friar holding his rosary (in field); Rev inscription: FRYER.IN.CHANCERY.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).

There is another token in the museum collection which depicts the same sign of the Grey Friar, NN16642. These tokens may represent two businesses in the same premises, or two proprietors of a business at different times. Chancery Lane lies within the London boroughs of Camden, City of Westminster and City of London, in the ward of Farringdon Without, having formerly lain across, Holborn and Westminster in Middlesex, and the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
