Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval-Tudor; late 15th-early 16th century
Christ
Pilgrim badge depicting Christ on the cross from an unknown shrine. Christ is shown wearing a loin cloth. The crucifix has a fleur-de-lys at each end of the horizontal limb. Above Christ’s head is a small plaque that bears the initials ‘INRI’ (‘Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum’, meaning ‘Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews’). Before the Reformation in the 16th century, every church had a large crucifix, known as a rood, on display. Some roods were associated with miracles and became the focus for pilgrimages.
