The Man and Pipe
Thomas Blake issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Castle Lane (since been St Andrews' Wharf, untraced location).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 478; Obv inscription: THOMAS.BLAKE.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A man standing smoking a pipe (in field); Rev inscription: IN.CASTELL.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = T.B (in field, in Roman capitals).
It is not known which historic Castle Lane this trade token refers to; it may be Castle Lane near Petty France, Westminster or the now obsolete Castle Lane in Castle Baynard Ward, in the City of London.
