The Crooked Billet
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Crooked Billet, at the Bulwark Gate, Tower Hill, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 447; Obv inscription: AT.THE.CROOKED.BILLIT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.I.S. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: AT.THE.BVLWORKE.GATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A crooked billet (in field).
The Bulwark Gate may have been one of the gates of the Tower or a gate in the wall, see Henry A. Harben, A Dictionary of London (London, 1918). The area lies in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of Stepney, Middlesex.
