The Lion
Richard Goodwin issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the Bulwark Gate, Tower Hill, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 445; Obv inscription: RICHARD.GOODWIN.AT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion rampant (in field); Rev inscription: THE.BVLWARKE.GATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = R.D.G. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The Bulwark gate may have been one of the Tower of London gates or a gate in the wall, see Henry A. Harben, A Dictionary of London (London, 1918). The area lies in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of Stepney, Middlesex.
