The Boar's Head
Samuel Newman issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business, the Guy of Warwick tavern in Brick Lane, Spitalfields, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 414; Obv inscription: SAMVELL. NEWMAN. AT. THE. GVY (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Guy standing, holding a boar's head on a spear (in field); Rev inscription: OF. WARWICK. IN. BRICK.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY / 1665 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Brick Lane, lies in the London borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of Stepney, Middlesex.
